The best and worst of 2010

I know it’s been over a month since I posted, but I have some real good reasons. First of all, I'll start with the best thing that happened this year. I gave birth to our newest bundle of joy. Meet Joseph, born on November 19th.

He is now 6 weeks old today. Wow, how time goes by. He’s already getting the chubby cheeks, showing us a peek of his smile, and cooing more each day. He actually had his first coo around 3 weeks of age. Especially this past week, we noticed an increase of interaction with us. Looking at us with more of a meaning. I hope you can understand what I’m trying to say. It just seems that a light bulb went off in his brain.

Addy is slowly adjusting to the new addition. At first she was possessive of him, then as the days went by, she would act out when she didn’t get her way. She would attempt to hit him or run over to the Christmas tree and pull the bulbs off and throw them on the floor, hence the tree looks like this:

We had to move the glass bulbs up the tree or completely off the tree. So, just your normal 2 year old behavior.

Other reason, for not posting: my health. Remember me talking about my knee. I finally had surgery on it. The IV medication was not taking care of the infection. Therefore off to the OR to clean out the infection. I have a nice scar down the middle of my knee with dots on each side for the scar from the 14 stitches. Yet, before I was able to address the knee, I had a very unexpected event happen. This how it went down.

It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Joseph was only 8 days old, we had our family and Joe’s newborn pictures taken earlier that day. We decided to decorate our Christmas tree after dinner. Matt was in the basement getting the lights, I had just finished feeding Joe, when I stood up, I felt like I had just peed my pants. I remember saying out loud with my 2 year old standing next to me, “ Seriously, I just wet myself?” I yelled for Matt at that moment and started towards the bathroom. As I moved forward, more of the wetting yourself feeling continued. As I looked down to the floor under me, I could not believe my eyes, I was bleeding. As I continued to walk, there was more blood. Finally made into the tub and with each movement, the bleeding would not stop. I was at the point where I didn’t want to move an inch, for the fear of losing more blood. Matt called 911 and as we waited for the EMTs, Addy keeping saying, “Mommy has an owie.” Remembering those 10-15 minutes until help arrived, is heart breaking. Matt holding Joe and making phone calls, Addy running in and out of the bathroom and me telling her that her mommy is okay.

Finally the EMT arrived and took me to the local hospital. It was there they determined that I was hemorrhaging due to left over placenta and a D & C had to be performed. Because of my blood type, B-, It was going to take time for the hospital to receive any blood to transfusion me. They told me that if necessary, they would transfuse the universal type. But was only if I became unstable. I was conscious and my blood pressure was actually okay, is was more hypertensive than hypotensive, which is on the good side of things. I was wheeled to the OR room. I remember being put on the operating table. I remember I was shake vigorously, like I was freezing. I remember the ER doc telling me or maybe to staff that we have to transfuse the “only if in an emergency” blood. I remember them telling me they are going to give me something to relax and them saying that the versed was given. The next thing I remember is waking up looking at a clock reading 2:00, it’s daylight, and hearing voices next to me. Someone told me that I was at a different hospital, a metro city hospital. I had to look out the window to confirm what was being told to me. And sure enough, I recognized the skyline of the city. I had been transferred in the middle of the night.

So this what was told to me on what happened after I was put to sleep for surgery. Apparently, the surgery went well, the surgeon felt he got the rest of the contents left in my uterus, tons of blood clots and some left over placenta. When I was in recovery, they tried to take the breathing tube out, but I didn’t tolerating it. They estimated I loss about 6 units of blood overall and that I was starting to go into DIC. “Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a rare, life-threatening condition that prevents a person's blood from clotting normally. It may cause excessive clotting (thrombosis) or bleeding (hemorrhage) throughout the body and lead to shock, organ failure, and death. In DIC, the body's natural ability to regulate blood clotting does not function properly. This causes the blood's clotting cells (platelets) to clump together and clog small blood vessels throughout the body. This excessive clotting damages organs, destroys blood cells, and depletes the supply of platelets and other clotting factors so that the blood is no longer able to clot normally. This often causes widespread bleeding, both internally and externally." From WebMD (http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/disseminated-intravascular-coagulation-dic-topic-overview)

This meant I received many units of blood, other blood products, blood thinners to help prevent form more clots forming, and heavy doses of antibiotics. Thankfully, with help of many prayers from family & friends, the skillful healthcare professionals, and the Lord above, I came out of the ordeal. Some of nurses were saying it was a miracle I made it. I don’t remember the majority that went on. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not. I gave my family & friends a BIG scare that weekend. My knee was taken care of two days after the bleeding incident. I spent a total of 7 days away from my kids. Unable to hold, kiss, cuddle my two beautiful bundles of joy was the hardest and heartbreaking I had to endure those 7 days. To sum it up, this was the worst part of 2010.

2011 should be my year, right? I hope as the year progresses, I'll be able to keep up this blog on a regular basis. I just ned to find that routine that has yet to show it's face. In time, I guess.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Mommy and Me Monday

Addy's first time holding her baby brother, Joseph.
She did not want to give him up to Grandma. She actually had a breakdown. :(
She loves him so much. It's been all hugs & kisses since he came home.

Rewind

I'm going to start this rewind starting the very early morning hours of last Sunday. Here's the rewind....

It all started about 1am, I could not, for the life of me, fall asleep. Reason, having contractions on what seemed like a regular basis. By 2am, I woke the hubby up & asked him start marking them. They were 5 minutes apart, lasting over a minute each time. They were uncomfortable, but not sure if they warrant calling the doc yet. So after about two hours of clocking the contractions, we made the call. Packed Addy & the suitcase and headed for the hospital to get checked out. Finally got ahold of the sis-in-law to come pick Addy up at the hospital. I was only at an 1 and baby had not dropped. So we waited for two hours to see if anything would happen. Nothing-the contractions started to pitter out and I was still at 1. Therefore homebound we went for some sleep. Apparently he was not ready.
Here are some past photos of the baby & me.

This a 3-D image of his face at 36weeks. The clinic had recently received the 3-D probe & the tech was playing around with it.
He's going to be a big boy. Don't you just love the chubby checks.

Mommy @ 37 weeks

Other thing new this past week, Addy has graduated to the toddler bed. She had climbed out of her crib in front of me one morning last week. We decided to give her one more chance to figure it out again. Well, during a Saturday afternoon, instead of sleeping, she was playing in her room. Books everywhere, stuffed animals scattered on the floor and clothes pulled out of her drawers. You see, usually she will talk herself to sleep and sometimes it takes her about a hour to do so. But after that hour mark, I had a inkling that something was up. She had crawled out of the crib for the second time. When she saw me in her room, she said to me, " I did it Mommy. I did it." Yes Addy, you sure did it. So, now she is free to roam her room & leave it as she pleases. I was not ready for this step. My mornings of letting her play in her crib for awhile, so I could just get those extra zzzz's, are gone. I'm not the best morning person. I love to sleep in. We are now getting the early morning wake up calls and she doesn't fall back to sleep with us, she wants to play or watch cartoons. Yesterday it was 5am.

We also had another unforeseen event happen this past week. I've been battling a swollen knee for about the last 3 weeks. I went to Urgent care Halloween eve, started an abx for a possible infected bursa. After almost 3 days on the med, I felt it was not getting better. I made an appt with an Infectious Disease MD- she had a Rheumatologist look at it. He felt is was NOT infected, just swollen and because I cannot take ibuprofen d/t the pregnancy, we had to sit on it for awhile. But finish the abx just to be on the safe side. After about 3-4 days of no improvement, it actually was getting worse. To the point where I was having a hard time walking on it and not being able to sleep because of the throbbing pain. The next day-they tapped the knee-really didn't get any fluid out. Therefore the Rheumatologist felt it was probably big blood clot on my knee. But he did send cultures to cover all the basis. It grew out a nice bacteria infection that is resistance to the oral abx I was on. So I made a overnite stay in the hospital to have IV abx started. Sent me home with a PICC line and a regimen of IV abx for 14 days. YEAH!!!! All I can do is laugh at this. This pregnancy started with a bang (pneumonia @ 6 weeks) and now it's only appropriate that ends with a bang. :)

My mother-in-law is the sweetest woman, she spent this past week with us to help out and is planning to come back tonite to help out until after big boy's arrival. Thank you Grandma!!!

To end this past week, Mother Nature decided to blanket us with the white stuff. The winter season has officially started. We've been so spoiled these past 12 days of a beautiful November with temps way above average. Addy's first words when she saw the snow falling, " What's that?" We replied, "It's snow." Addy: " I have to get my mittens." She wanted to make a snowman.

Making snow angels.

Here's Addy's friend thanks to Daddy.

Now it's time for hot chocolate! YUM!!

That's the rewind. Until next week..... (there should be a new addition to the family by then.)

Baby project

All over the blog world I have been seeing these infant car seat canopy tutorials. I thought what a great gift idea. I have now made 7 of these awesome gifts. Unfortunately, I have only one to show you. I didn't have a car seat to demo the first 6. But for the seventh one, we finally got a car seat thanks to my sisters-in-law. This is the one I made for my little one soon to enter our lives.

As you can see, I went with baseball theme. It seemed only fitting since his room is the same theme.

I thought the baseball fabric was a little busy all by it's self. I think the solid red band added just the right touch.

I added baseball hat buttons to the straps

I used navy mircofleece for the back. This fabric is the softest.
I love how this turned out.

I have thank Calli @ Make It Do for the great & easy instructions. I plan on making more of these in the coming months for friends who are expecting.

Tinkerbell Inspired

I finally finished the last handmade Christmas gift for my 3 year old niece. I had decided to make a play outfit for her. She's big into Tinkerbell. Therefore this called for a Tutu, a fairytale wand, a jeweled headband and of coarse the fairytale wings.

Here are the pictures of the finished gifts.

I got the inspiration for the wand
Thanks you ladies from Little Birdie Secrets!

Here is the jeweled headband, complements to Can't Stop Making Things blog for the idea.

As for the Tutu, I just searched YouTube for tutorials, there are tons of videos on this subject. Here's how my niece's turned out.

I'll be making Addy one of these for Christmas too. I picked the colors red, pink, purple & white for hers.

Lastly, I had make the fairytale wings. I searched several blogs and YouTube videos on how to construct the Tinkerbell-like wings. I give A Big Thank You to Mommy Blessings for the finally tutorial I used. Click Here for the instructions.

So, without any further delay, here are the wings:

I sure hope my niece likes this gift. I already wrapped in it up in a HUGE box.

Baby's Room

The new baby's room is 99% done. All that needs to be added is the crib. Since the baby will be in our room for the first few months, we decided to wait on getting the crib until after the first of the year. We have it picked out already.

We went with the baseball theme, since the hubby likes my hometown team too. If it had been a football ( the hubby's fav sport) theme, it could only be Packer colors. I'm not really keen on the green & gold color scheme. With baseball, I had more say in the color choices.

When you first walk thru the door, this what you see:

I made the scoreboard from a left over piece of plywood used for Addy's kitchen. Just painted it a red color, then lightly went over the red with a brown wash to give it a worn look. I used chalkboard spray paint for the black score boxes. That way, we or the kids can actually use it when playing baseball in the yard.

This dresser was a craiglist's find. I just painted it the same color as the room's blue. Then had the hubby spray paint the handles in rubbed bronze. (My new fav metal finish.)

This dresser will also serve as the changing table, just like Addy's dresser does.

I saved my fav piece for his room for last. I had an image in my head as to what I wanted to see on the wall above the future crib. I gave you a sneak peek months ago about this project. Well here it, all finished.

I love it!!!!!

It looks like what was in my head. I love when things turn out like that.

Now just need to add baby.
